First Graders Hatch Chicks

Animals can be very exciting for first graders. The last month we have been studying animals and their habitats. We have learned about 5 different groups of animals and their characteristics. One of our exciting experiments during our animal unit is hatching chickens and documenting their lifecycle. All the first grade classes gathered together at the beginning of our experiment and we talked about everything we knew about chickens. Many students had some prior knowledge about chicks and what to expect. My favorite response was “We eat chickens”. We then made predictions about what would happen if we recreated the correct conditions to hatch eggs. The first graders had some great hypothesis- some chicks will be yellow, not all the eggs will hatch. We put our batch of eggs (45 in all) into the incubator. A week into our experiment McLouth lost electricity and we lost all our eggs. The students were disappointed but I promised we would start again.
March 5th we placed a new group of eggs into the incubator (47 this time). The day we returned from Spring Break was very exciting. Eggs started to hatch and over the next 3 days we hatched 30 chicks. We had a great time learning about living things and how they depend on specific needs to help keep them alive.First Graders Hatch Chicks
