Ronald McDonald House

The elementary student council delivered pop tabs to the Ronald McDonald House in Topeka.  The Ronald McDonald House is a place for families to stay if their child is in the hospital.  It gives them a place to stay that is close to the hospital and cheaper than a motel room.

We were given a tour of the house and learned many different facts.  The house was built in 1909. A family lived there for a long time. It was remodeled in 1988 to become the Ronald McDonald House.   There are eight rooms for the families to stay in. There is a room with toys for the children to play in. This helps them to feel more like they are at home.

The Ronald McDonald House relies on a lot of volunteers such as mowing, cooking, and cleaning.   It also runs on donations for things such as furniture, bedding, and food.

Some fun facts we learned:  When the family lived there a shoe was accidentally thrown at the stained glass window and cracked it.  There is a floor-to-ceiling mirror and attached is a statue of a lady holding a lantern. It is called the “Maiden of the Lantern” and it was supposed to lead boats home if the lighthouse wasn’t on. It would draw boats to safe harbor.  The Ronald McDonald House is considered a home away from home and the lantern can be an inspiration to families. The character Ronald McDonald was chosen because they thought he was a nice friendly character.

Thank you for collecting pop tabs and please continue to send them.
