February 6 -10, 2012!

Language Arts

(Reading, English, Spelling)

 

 

 

Independent Reading: 
Requirement – 2 books for February.  Students should be finishing their first book by this Monday, February 13.

 

We had a few students who didn’t meet the deadline for 2 books in January and it will be reflected in their reading grade.  Please encourage your child to read a few minutes each night.

 

 

*Weekly Reader –Hunger Pains – Students will be working on the Weekly Reader on class on Friday this week.

Reading:  Novel:  Cricket in Times Square by George Seldon

 

*We will read Chapters 9 – 14 and finish the book next week.  

 

*Skill:  Venn Diagrams, Drawing Conclusions, Problem/Solution; Predictions and Settings. 

 

►English:

*Author’s Purpose – review of passages/select correct AP 

*Review Capitalization rules with a “Cricket in Times Square” reading

*Word Analogies – similar relationships (continue discussing examples from packet)

 

► Spelling:  Prefixes and Suffixes/endings

*These words (many are multi –syllable) are from the reading in the novel “Cricket in Times Square”.  They may have a prefix, suffix or ending.   Students may need some extra practice this week.

 

Words 1- 20 will be graded words, while words 21 - 25 will be challenge words that can help their grade at the end of the quarter.

Examples:  clustered, contentment, disbelief.

 

Spelling Study Practice Sheet (Peer Tutor):  comes home the night before the test on Thursday this week to study and get a parent signature to be ready for the test on Friday.

 

Handwriting:  we will concentrate on the lowercase and capital “T, t” on individual letters and in sentence form.

Math

►Chapter 6 Time, Temperature and Data

*Lesson 6 Temperature p. 164-165

Students will measure temperature and changes in temperature in degrees Fahrenheit and degrees Celsius.  This will be helpful for the math assessment and for the science assessment.

 

►Chapter 9 Multiplication by one digit

*Lesson 6 p. 258 – 259 Multiplication with zeros

 

►Chapter 18 Add and Subtract Decimals and Money

*Lesson 6 p. 496 – 497  Making Change

We will use manipulative money, pencil/paper and a money mat to discuss making change.

*Count On to make change

*Count back change by counting coins then bills up to the amount.

Social Studies

►Northeast Region – we will study the states of the northeast and our nation’s capital after the Electricity/Magnet and Sound units in science.

Science

Unit F Chapter 15 Electricity and Magnets

 

Chapter 15 Science Tests

 

* Chapter 15 Book Test – Tuesday, Feb. 7

 

►Unit F, Chapter 14 Sound
*Read the A-Z booklet “How Sound Works”

*Use the comprehension check to check for understanding.  This will be a great booklet to use as a resource for assessment review.
