Spelling: long/short (i and o) We will practice the words in class. Basic words 1- 20 are tested on Friday; Challenge Words 21-25 should be attempted but don’t hurt the student’s grade. All correct challenge words are extra credit at the end of the quarter and can help students raise their grade. Reading: Grandfather’s Journey Summary: The author’s Grandfather came to the United States as a young man and later returned to Japan. After growing up in Japan, the author moves to the United States. Like his grandfather, he misses one country when he is in the other Skill: Predict and Infer Author’s Viewpoint—the author’s language, information given and left out and the use of art and photographs Independent Reading: Students will make their final book choice for September. Weekly Reader – We will model how to complete the Weekly Reader this week. Soon the students will complete it independently. Weekly Reader will count as a reading grade this quarter! Take Home Book: (Handed out on Thursday/due back on Monday) This week’s booklet is called Time for Piece

Lesson 4 Compare Whole Numbers (p. 12 – 15) Lesson 5 Ordering Whole Numbers (p. 16-19) We are in the process of setting up Track and Accelerated Math. Students will practice +/- facts with 2 minute timings. Science: Chapter 8, Lesson 1 Forces That Shape the Earth’s Surface Lesson 1 How Rocks Form ( p. C6-11) We will continue to read about types of rocks in the earth’s crust such as sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic and the rock cycle. Vocabulary – we have learned 9 science vocabulary words in lesson 1. Students should be studying the vocabulary cards for Lesson 1 (a “1” appears in the corner of the card) at home this week. |
